Description:

A training and awareness programme on “Balanced Use of Fertilizers and Science-Based Nutrient Management” and “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” was organized by the scientists of ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management on 2nd June 2026 at Kantabada village under Bhubaneswar Block in Khurda district as part of the MGMG Programme Team-2. The programme aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge of balanced use of organic fertilizers and scientific nutrient management for improving crop productivity while maintaining soil health. Scientists emphasized the application of organic fertilizers in the right dose, time, and method based on crop requirements and soil-test recommendations. Discussions highlighted the adverse effects of excessive fertilizer use, including soil degradation, nutrient imbalance, rising cultivation costs, and environmental concerns. Farmers were encouraged to adopt Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) through the combined use of chemical fertilizers, farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost, and bio fertilizers. The programme concluded with an interactive session where farmers discussed field-level nutrient management issues and received practical technical guidance from the scientists. A total of 25 progressive farmers of the village participated the programme.
