Awareness Programme on Balanced Use of Fertilizers and Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Haradiapada Village in Biridi Block on 9th June 2026

Description:

Under the MGMG Programme (Team-2), scientists from ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management (ICAR-IIWM) organized a farmer awareness and capacity-development programme on 09 June 2026 at Haladiapada village under Biridi Block of Jagatsinghpur district. The programme was centered on the themes of “Balanced Fertilizer Use and Scientific Nutrient Management” and the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan,” with the objective of promoting sustainable nutrient management practices for improving crop productivity and safeguarding soil health. During the programme, the scientists highlighted the significance of applying fertilizers based on soil test results and crop-specific nutrient requirements. The participants were informed about the negative consequences of indiscriminate and imbalanced fertilizer use, such as declining soil quality, nutrient imbalances, increased cultivation costs, and environmental contamination. Special emphasis was given to the adoption of Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices, wherein chemical fertilizers are judiciously supplemented with organic inputs including farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost, and biofertilizers. The scientists explained that such integrated approaches help maintain soil fertility, improve nutrient availability, and support long-term agricultural sustainability. The programme concluded with an interactive question and answer session, providing farmers an opportunity to discuss nutrient management challenges encountered in their fields. The experts responded with practical, science-based, and location-specific recommendations tailored to local farming conditions. A total of 15 progressive farmers participated enthusiastically in the programme and benefited from the technical guidance provided.
