A farmer capacity-building and awareness programme was conducted at Paridasahi village in Biridi Block in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha on 11th June 2026 to disseminate knowledge on judicious fertilizer application, sustainable nutrient management and the key messages of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan. During the programme, the scientists of ICAR-IIWM, Bhubaneswar explained the significance of maintaining a proper nutrient balance for crops and cautioned against the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, which can gradually deteriorate soil quality and reduce nutrient-use efficiency. Farmers were encouraged to integrate organic sources of nutrients, such as farmyard manure, compost, and biofertilizers, with recommended doses of chemical fertilizers to achieve sustainable crop production while preserving soil health. In light of the anticipated lower than normal rainfall during the current agricultural season, participants were advised to adopt suitable contingency measures to minimize climatic risks. The scientists recommended the cultivation of early-maturing and short-duration paddy varieties that can perform better under limited water availability and help secure yields in uncertain weather conditions. The programme also emphasized efficient water management practices and the need for timely field operations to make the best use of available soil moisture and rainfall. The benefits of green manuring were discussed in detail, with particular emphasis on Dhaincha (Sesbania spp.) as an effective soil-enriching crop. Farmers were informed that incorporation of Dhaincha into the soil can improve organic carbon content, enhance nutrient availability, and support long-term soil productivity while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. The programme further highlighted the importance of climate-resilient and resource-conserving agricultural practices for ensuring sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection. The training witnessed active engagement of 20 progressive farmers from the farming community with participants taking part in discussions and seeking practical solutions to field level challenges.
