On June 23, 2026, the MGMG Team 2 of ICAR-IIWM, Bhubaneswar organized a farmers’ awareness program in Bhatakudi village, located within the Jatni block. Driven by the core objective of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, the initiative focused on preparing the local farming community for a challenging agricultural season, as meteorological forecasts indicate a probable low-rainfall year due to the El Niño effect. Total 25 progressive farmers of the village actively participated in the interactive session, where experts from the MGMG team highlighted the urgent need for climate-resilient practices. A primary focus was placed on rainwater conservation techniques to help farmers safeguard their crops against impending dry spells and optimize every drop of available water. To ensure long-term soil health and reduce dependency on expensive chemical inputs, the program strongly advocated for the balanced use of fertilizers alongside organic alternatives. The team placed special emphasis on the adoption of green manure, specifically promoting the cultivation of Dhaicha, a fast-growing legume that fixes nitrogen and significantly improves soil structure before the main cropping cycle. Additionally, the benefits of vermi compost were highlighted as an accessible, nutrient-rich solution to enhance the moisture-retention capacity of the soil, which is a critical factor for surviving low-rainfall conditions. The participating farmers expressed keen interest in integrating these sustainable practices to protect their livelihoods and preserve their land for future seasons.
