A special Health Awareness Camp was organized on 20th November, 2025 in the Barapita tribal village of Khordha, adopted under the ICAR-IIWM Farmer FIRST Project, in collaboration with AIIMS, Bhubaneswar as part of the observance of World Diabetes Day held recently. At the outset, Dr. S.K. Mishra, Principal Scientist & PI and Dr. Prativa Sahu, Scientist welcomed the AIIMS medical team, as well as participating villagers and briefed them about the importance of organizing the health awareness cum screening programme in the village. The medical team of twelve members comprising doctors and paramedical staff like nurses and technicians, led by Dr. Niraja Guru, Assistant Professor from the Dept. of Community Medicines & Family Medicines, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar conducted the camp. They made general health check-ups including body weight, height, blood haemoglobin level, diabetes screening, blood pressure monitoring, and provided medical consultations to the villagers. Essential medicines were also distributed free of cost and need-based health advisories were provided. A total of over 80 villagers, including men, women including pregnant, children and elderly persons of the village actively participated in the camp and got benefited. The villagers appreciated the initiative, expressed that such health services were extremely valuable for remote tribal areas, where regular medical facilities are limited. The camp focused on raising awareness about diabetes, its symptoms, prevention strategies, dietary practices, and lifestyle modifications. Doctors emphasized the importance of early detection and timely management to reduce long-term health complications. Interactive discussions were held to clarify doubts and encourage the community to adopt healthier daily habits. The programme highlighted the project’s commitment to holistic development by integrating health, nutrition, and livelihood security for tribal households. It concluded successfully with strong community engagement and active participation, supported by the dedicated efforts of Ms. Isha Anindita Sahoo, SRF, and Mr. Firoj Kumar Pradhan, Field Assistant of the project, who effectively coordinated the village-level activities.
