Description:

An Awareness-cum-Farmer–Scientist Interaction Programme on Science-based Balanced Use of Fertilizers was organized on 26 June 2026 at Brahmana Suanlo village, Sarakana Gram Panchayat, Balianta Block, Khordha district, Odisha, under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan of the Government of India in collaboration with Sishu Ananta Farmer Producer Company Ltd., Balipatana. Dr. S. K. Mishra, Principal Scientist, outlined the objectives of the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ and emphasized the importance of science-based balanced fertilizer use for conserving soil health and ensuring food, nutritional, and environmental security. He highlighted the need for balanced fertilization, enhancement of soil organic matter, and reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers for sustainable agriculture. He also discussed the benefits of FYM, vermicompost, green manuring (Sesbania/ Dhaincha), leguminous crops, Azolla, Blue-Green Algae, LCC-based nitrogen application, Nano-Urea, and Nano-DAP in improving nutrient-use efficiency and crop productivity. Stressing integrated nutrient management, he encouraged farmers to recycle locally available farm resources and combine organic and inorganic nutrient sources to maintain long-term soil fertility while reducing cultivation costs. Dr. Ashis Maity, Principal Scientist, explained the role of crop residue incorporation, conservation agriculture, and moisture conservation in improving soil health and climate resilience. He also demonstrated the preparation and application of bio-inputs such as Beejamrut, Ghan Jeevamrut, Brahmastra, and Neemastra, highlighting their role in enhancing beneficial microbial populations and nutrient availability. Sri Kalandi Behera, CEO of the Farmer Producer Company, motivated farmers to adopt scientific soil health management practices and disseminate the knowledge among fellow farmers. The interactive session enabled farmers to share their experiences and challenges related to soil fertility. Scientists addressed their queries with practical recommendations for improving soil health, nutrient-use efficiency, and sustainable crop productivity. The programme concluded with a collective pledge to adopt soil-friendly agricultural practices. A total of 28 participants, including 2 farm women, attended the programme.
