Description:

On June 30, 2026, the MGMG Team 2 from ICAR-IIWM, Bhubaneswar organized a farmers' awareness program in Madhupur village, located in the Jatni block. Organized under the banner of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, the initiative focused on equipping local farmers for a challenging agricultural season ahead, as meteorological forecasts point toward a low-rainfall year influenced by El Niño. The interactive session was attended by 28 progressive farmers from the village. During the discussions, experts highlighted the critical importance of adopting climate-resilient farming techniques. Rainwater conservation highlighted as an essential strategy to sustain crops during dry spells and optimize the use of limited water supplies. To foster long-term soil health and minimize dependence on expensive chemical fertilizers, the team advocated for a balanced approach to nutrient management combined with organic options. Specifically, it was advised cultivating green manure, pointing to Dhaicha for its ability to fix nitrogen and upgrade soil structure prior to main crop planting. Additionally, vermi compost use was promoted as an economical, nutrient-dense solution that boosts the soil's water-retention capacity during periods of low rainfall. The participating farmers expressed a keen interest in integrating these sustainable practices.
