A Scientist–Farmer Interaction Meet was organized at Sajanapada village, Nayagarh, Odisha, with the participation of 28 women farmers from SHGs to facilitate participatory planning of Rabi 2026 crops based on available groundwater resources on 19th August 2026 under RKVY-GWR project by ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management (IIWM), Bhubaneswar. The farmers were informed about the improved groundwater availability following substantial monsoon recharge, with the recharge-shaft-integrated dug wells reported to be full during August 2026. During the interaction, scientists and farmers discussed groundwater status, crop water requirements, irrigation needs and suitable crop choices for the upcoming Rabi season. The participating women farmers showed keen interest in diversifying towards high-value crops such as turmeric and flowers, considering their market potential and compatibility with available water resources. Emphasis was placed on adopting water-efficient irrigation practices and matching crop area with groundwater availability to avoid excessive withdrawal. The interaction strengthened farmer participation in groundwater-based crop planning and demonstrated how groundwater recharge, sustainable water management and high-value crop diversification can jointly contribute to improved farm income and long-term groundwater sustainability.
